Cataphora Announces Certification under Safe Harbor Framework

Continuing its Commitment to Maintaining the Privacy and Confidentiality of Customer Data, Cataphora Receives Safe Harbor Certification

Cataphora, Inc., an industry-leading provider of software for review and analysis of electronic data, today announced its certification under the Safe Harbor Privacy Framework between the United States Department of Commerce and the European Commission with respect to personal data that is transferred from the European economic area to the United States.

The European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection was issued in October of 1998, with the intent to prohibit the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that do not meet the European “adequacy” standard for privacy protection. Since the United States and the European Union take different approaches to protecting the privacy of their citizens, the U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with the European Commission, contracted a “Safe Harbor” framework to provide organizations with the information and means to comply with the Directive so they can effectively evaluate and join Safe Harbor.

Cataphora’s certification under the Safe Harbor framework ensures that the European Union recognizes Cataphora as offering adequate privacy protection as defined by the EU’s Directive on Data Protection. With more than six years of electronic disclosure experience in the U.S. market, Cataphora has focused on expanding its international presence over the past year, announcing appointments to its leadership team in both Germany and France. An important part of Cataphora’s European operations is the ability to handle data within the EU; the Safe Harbor certification extends this capability by allowing for ready transfer of data from EU member states to Cataphora’s facilities in the United States in situations where this benefits the customer.

“Cataphora is committed to upholding stringent privacy and security safeguards to ensure our customers the utmost privacy to which they are entitled,” said Elizabeth Charnock, CEO of Cataphora, Inc. “As we continue to expand our services abroad, particularly in Europe, the Safe Harbor certification is important to not only comply with regulations that enable us to serve our international customers, but also protect the integrity of the company.”

“The certification also further improves the service we can provide to multi-national organizations,” Charnock continued. “Cataphora can now process its data in the country from which it was originally produced or, thanks to this certification, we can offer the option of transferring it for processing in our facilities in the United States.”

Cataphora’s compliance with the Safe Harbor framework is further detailed on the company web site at http://www.cataphora.com/eu_safe_harbor_compliance.php. About Cataphora:

Cataphora Inc. is the creator of a suite of industry-leading products for investigative analytics and electronic evidence review. These provide attorneys, compliance officers and investigators with unprecedented insight into electronic data, revealing fact and behavior patterns, and providing answers to critical questions that were previously unanswerable. Cataphora’s solutions are widely used by corporations, private law firms and investigators with document-intensive matters in areas such as white-collar crime, securities, antitrust and intellectual property.

Cataphora software is based on groundbreaking, patented technology that overthrows a long-standing assumption that the individual document is the logical unit of search and information retrieval. Instead, Cataphora’s technology offers the construct of a “Discussion™” – a logical sequence of dialog among a set of actors, which may span many items, and even different types of items. Applications built on this technology are exceptionally suitable to unraveling the implications of modern electronic communications, with their wide variety of formats and frequently very terse and cryptic nature.

Cataphora is headquartered in Redwood City, California, with offices in Washington, DC; and Frankfurt, Germany; a certified reseller in London, England; and a field office in France. For more information, please visit www.cataphora.com.
