Based on Software Used in Investigations and Litigation, New Program Analyzes Electronic Communication to Portray the “Digital You”
Cataphora Inc., an industry-leading provider of software for analysis of individual and organizational behavior, today announced Digital Mirror, a consumer software tool that presents users with a unique view of the Digital You—the user’s online persona. The initial First Glimpse version of Digital Mirror, available immediately, provides a set of nine visualizations, based on analysis of an individual’s data, which offer thought-provoking interpretations of interactions with others in their digital ecosystem.
Describing the Digital You, Elizabeth Charnock, chief executive officer of Cataphora, writes in her new book “E-Habits: What You Must Do to Optimize Your Professional Digital Presence:
“The Digital You is a complex mosaic of habit, subconscious acts of both omission and commission, and premeditated presentations. It is how your peers and friends, bosses and family actually experience you, as more and more of your business, school and personal life takes place in the digital world.”
“The Digital You can behave quite differently from the real you,” explains Charnock. “The Digital You may be more aggressive or sneakier or funnier, for example. Digital Mirror often shows users Digital You behavior patterns that they have been completely unaware of.” Visualizations available in the initial version include insights into “buck-passing” behavior, stressful topics and the contrast between the amount of time you spend with someone versus the observable level of social comfort you have with them. Many of the visualizations are animated to illustrate changes in behavior over time and to pinpoint moments of change.
Digital Mirror is a natural extension of software and expertise Cataphora has developed over the course of more than eight years’ helping customers analyze evidence in major litigation and a wide variety of investigations. As Charnock explains, “techniques that successfully identify whether corporate executives were active participants in a decision-making process, or whether they tended to hand off such responsibilities, are directly applicable to identifying ‘buck-passing’ tendencies on the part of everyday people.”
Esther Dyson—often described as the Internet court jester—comments: “This edgy tool gives normal users a look at their communication patterns in a way that was previously available only to technically proficient professional investigators. The transparency that Digital Mirror injects into your communications with others can be delightful or uncomfortable, depending on who you are and who you want to be.”
Digital Mirror relies heavily on the tradecraft that has been an essential part of Cataphora’s success, coupled with a small subset of the company’s patented data analysis technologies. In the coming months, Cataphora will extend Digital Mirror to integrate data from a wide variety of sources to capture a more complete portrait of the Digital You, including social media platforms and a broader range of email and IM programs. Cataphora also plans to expand the available visualizations and broaden the scope of the product with a “multi-player” or small business edition. In addition, Cataphora will offer an API and license a Digital Mirror Developers’ Kit for those who wish to create their own custom analyses or visualizations.
“The software is a ground-breaking effort in more ways than one,” adds Charnock. “Cataphora is a rarity: a self-funded tech company. As such, we have pushed the barrier in terms of the kind of software product that can be brought to market with a lean, limited-budget effort. We like to think of Digital Mirror as the software equivalent of a good Indie movie.”

E-Habits: the book about the Digital You
“E-Habits,” authored by Elizabeth Charnock and published by McGraw-Hill, is also now available. The book provides insights into the Digital You, describing how our online presence can affect—for better or worse—our real-world lives. The book covers topics including the Digital You at work, at play, in a bad mood and in love, and examines ways in which understanding the Digital You can improve the real you. The book is full of examples drawn (anonymously where appropriate) from Cataphora’s many years of success in the field of behavioral modeling.
